LAWARDS Press Release

The winner of the LAWARDS embodies the power of social innovation in the legal sector

With more than 20 innovative proposals coming from all over the world, Law Schools Global League is pleased to announce the winner and finalists of the first edition of Lawards: Innovation in Law Awards.

The winner of this first edition of the LAWARDS is “LAWBOT”, a proposal created by Ugochukwu Nnaemeka, Egbuna Linda and Adebukola Fatunde from Nigeria, Africa. LAWBOT, which is currently being developed in Nigeria, embodies the essence of the LAWARDS, for it creates awareness of legal rights through an innovative platform and solves the problem of access to Justice by giving everybody the opportunity to receive sound legal advice at no cost.

LSGL initially established in the call for applications that there would be one finalist, but the evaluation committee has considered that there were two equally innovative proposals that merited to be declared finalists. The two finalists are “LAWMATE”, by Gautami Raiker from India; and “Preventing human rights violations in the context of large-scale infrastructure projects: the need for an early alarm system”, by Flavia Silva Scabin and Isabella Jagg from Brazil.

“We are truly delighted by the success of the first edition of the LAWARDS. The evaluation committee has received more than 20 applications of an excellent quality from all over the world and it has been tough to make a decision. The winners and finalists truly represent technology-based innovation in the legal sector for the common good. We look forward to collaborate with Lawbot and the finalist teams in the future and are most grateful to ONTIER for their support,” said Javier de Cendra, dean IE Law School, and Bertil Emrah Oder, dean of Koç Law School, Co-Presidents of the Law Schools Global League.

Law Schools Global League created LAWARDS with the support of Ontier, aiming to discover and promote early innovators who are disrupting the legal services industry in ways that help promote the cause of justice of underserved communities. In this first edition, the initiative has truly shown the global need for technology based solutions and the power that social innovation has in the legal sector.

Representatives of the winner and finalist groups will be invited to Mexico City for three days where they will be attending the Award Ceremony taking place during the LSGL´s Annual Conference at ITAM on the evening of July 20, 2017.
